FINISHED WITH FRENCH OAK STAVES FOR EXTRA WOOD SPICE, BOLDER NOTES OF VANILLA AND CARAMEL, AND A LONGER FINISH

Bill, Jr. finished this expression with virgin French Oak staves for extra wood spice, bolder notes of vanilla and caramel, and a longer finish. (It was Stave Profile #46 that did the trick.)

A few years back I became obsessed with creating a new version of Maker's Mark with amplified notes of vanilla, caramel and spice while offering a longer finish without the bitterness my Dad was so opposed to. After a lengthy process of trial and error, I landed on the idea of finishing fully-matured Maker's Mark in the barrel for a little bit longer with specially chosen French Oak staves. And we had a winner. If I have a legacy, I guess this is it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

That first taste says it all. Our cask-strength bourbon is the boldest expression of Maker's Mark to date. Bottled at barrel proof, it's remarkably full-flavored yet still smooth and refined thanks to the soft, red winter wheat we have used since the beginning.

At any distillery, a cask-strength whisky straight from the barrel is the truest reflection of who you are and what you do. Here, at Maker's Mark, this is who we are-and we're pretty darn happy about it.

About Maker's Mark

Maker's Mark is a small-batch bourbon whiskey produced in Loretto, Kentucky, by Beam Suntory. It is typically bottled at 90 U.S. proof (45% alcohol by volume) and sold in squarish bottles sealed with red wax. Maker's Mark is unusual in that no rye is used as part of the mash. Instead of rye Maker's Mark uses red winter wheat (16%), along with corn (70%) and malted barley (14%) in the Mash Bill.

Red Winter Wheat

This one changed the way we think of bourbon, all because one man changed the way he thought about making it. Bill Samuels, Sr., simply wanted a whisky he would enjoy drinking. Never bitter or sharp, Maker's Mark® is made with soft red winter wheat instead of the usual rye, for a one-of-a-kind, full-flavored bourbon that's smooth and balanced.

Bill found his ideal mash bill in the kitchen, cleverly testing mash bills through bread in order to quickly test recipes without distilling and aging. It's the red winter wheat that imparts the front-of-palate sweetness that Maker's® is known for.

Rotated by hand and aged to taste

To ensure consistency we rotate every barrel by hand and age our bourbon to taste, not time, in our solar powered warehouses. Each and every bottle of Maker's® is still hand-dipped in our signature red wax at our distillery in Loretto, KY., just like Bill Sr. would have wanted.

FOUNDING Star Hill Farm

The limestone shelf where the distillery is located is key to crafting the unique taste of Maker's Mark® – the only distillery with its own water source and watershed. Kentucky limestone filters out iron from water, which is unpleasant in bourbon. The pure calcium- and magnesium-rich water surrounding the distillery makes better drinking water and a better sour mash in which yeast can flourish.
